Supply customer prints or disk only?

What happened to providing the customer with prints? It seems the "end product" the consumer receives is a disk of images, and no prints. Is this driven by the photographer or the consumer? If a customer gets a disk of really good files, but gets poor prints from their choice of cheapo print labs (my guess is the consumer is often trying to avoid the markup a photographer needs to make on the prints), who do they blame? The photographer or the lab? Does the photographer ultimately pay a hefty price in bad word of mouth from someone blaming the wrong source of poor images? I prefer to provide prints, but I'm getting more and more request for disk only jobs. Any observations?
