I think printing will change, as will photography. It is like a living evolving being. But, I don't think it will ever go away. Digital cameras for the first time have given the photographer absolute and total control over the process from choosing what to take a picture of, how to do it, what to do with it in editing and finally in how to print it.

While not everyone cares about this control a lot of people do and I don't see them giving up this control.

I think what we will see is a more limited selection of higher quality photo printers, consolidated inks and papers. The cream of the cream and the loss of the slop.
