Help me understand if pdaf works or not

Hi, I just bought NEX 6, and curious about how PDAF works. In some threads here there were information from fellow user that PDAF only works at f6.3 or larger, but I found that when I set my 55-210 to aperture about f11 or smaller the pdaf apparently still working. The evf or lcd didn't get darker when I half pressed a shutter button. There was no hunting also. I used AF-S, flexible spot.

I just assumed that it works like PDAF in DSLR (I have D90) that pdaf works at the largest lens aperture, and when the shutter fully pressed, lens aperture is changed to the desired number. Is that correct? Please educate me, because this is my first sony camera.

Thank you.
