Do you know people with boats, snowmobiles, motorcycles, ATVs or other expensive toys ? I wouldn't spend $18K on a lens, because I don't do photography seriously enough to warrant it. But some do.

Exactly...I'd rather be out in the woods with an 800mm f/5.6 than on a boat fishing and drinking light beer. And I wouldn't be making money either way.

And I paid less for my car (used) than I did for my 400mm f/2.8.

If there's a will, there's a way. Plenty of people make far less than me (not that I make that much) but drive far nicer cars than me. For 7 years of my life, I didn't even own a registered vehicle. I rode my bike for the majority of my solo travel and I went everywhere else in my girlfriend's car (she used public transportation most of the time so her car was available). I saved far more than $18k during that period even if you assume I was driving some cheap compact car. So while I was making far less than $100k/year, an $18k lens would be easily attainable in a few years, or I could have played the credit card 0%-interest-on-balance-transfer game for a few years until I paid it off.

Currently, I own two bicycles, a camera body, and a small collection of lenses that singly are worth more than one of my cars (my wife's 1999 Honda Civic). Priorities...
