With manual focus lenses and shallow DOF I still prefer the good old zoom in method. I experimented with peaking at shallow DOF and sometimes I could just get a bit more sharpness by turning 1mm left or right. There is a difference when zoomed in.

But if you are using peaking on things with clear outline and high contrast I'd say you'll nail it 99% of the time if not a 100. A perfect example would be shooting a stop sign in day light. It is guaranteed to get the word STOP in perfect focus.

I normally use peaking at MID. Low really depends on the situation.
