Sigh, it's such a tragedy the problems that plague the first world purchaser....everyone these says is a victim of something.

Yeah, but Nikon used to offer two reasonably affordable cameras optimized for shooting action (the D700 and D300) and now they have no modern cameras in those spots.  From the current line, only the D4 is optimized for action.  The D800 has the desired AF, but 4fps and 36MP are not at all what action photographers want.  The D600 doesn't have the desired AF, build or fps either (though 6fps is better than 8fps, but it's still not the 8fps that the D700/D300 had).

There is a significant segment of the market that wants a great action camera.  If Nikon isn't going to offer this any more, then they will just lose those shooters to the competition over time.  That doesn't really make sense since Nikon won so many of them with the D700 and D300.  Why would they want to just throw all those customers away by going 5 years with no modern sensor in a package that meets their needs?  It doesn't make sense.  I'm sure they know this so they are either consciously deciding to focus elsewhere and are OK with losing these customers (unlikely) or they have just prioritized other things before it and cameras for the action photographers are coming (seems more likely to me).  And, please don't say that action photographers should just go buy a D4.  More than 95% of the market is never going to spend $6k on a D4.  The action photographer market that Nikon built with the D700/D300 was mostly people who are never going to spend $6k on a D4.
