D5100 failure (?) at subfreezing temps.

I'm up in Alaska for work, and I used my D5100 in -20 deg weather.  The biggest thing I noticed is that the AF became a little slow.  I made sure to hold my breath when shooting because when I exhaled, it would create frost on my LCD and Viewfinder.  
I'd suggest the heatpacks that normally go into gloves.  I stuck two of them to the sides of my camera, surrounding the battery compartment.

Also, at that temp, my battery only lasted 30 min tops.  Then I pulled it out, and rubber-banded two of the heatpacks to the battery and let it warm up in my pocket.
