Not true. The film was simply not advancing - a common problem with students. Or, when a gear sticks, or breaks, the film fails to advance. This was a very common problem with the very early Pentax K-1000 bodies which used cheap pot metal gears instead of brass. I remember sending in every single class camera - repeatedly for this problem.
