I get asked this a ton as well. I usually dumb down my explanation to saying that the sensor is the same (or better) as in DSLRs, and that it's simply my tool of choice. However, it's always funny to see people dumbfounded in public at a baseball game come up to me saying "Why are you using a lens (my 300mm f/2.8) to see the ball game? Oh wait, is that a CAMERA attached there?" Priceless.
