I agree with what you have decided.  My experience with my camera - first DSLR - has shown me that the more I learn about how to use it, the better photographs I can take.  The tool is only as good as the skill of the user.

Just keep trying - experiment with different settings and techniques.  Take lots of pictures.  When you have improved to the point that you have outgrown your camera, then consider upgrading.  In the meantime, better lenses is the best way to go.  After all, in the event that you do upgrade, probably at least most, if not all, of those lenses will work with the new camera.  (Depends on whether you continue with DX or decide to go with FX.)
