Outdoor portraits using only natural light

Hello - I'd appreciate some advice on improving my portraits.

I have been taking pictures at an archery event for the last couple of years. These consist primarily of informal portraits of the participants as people enjoy seeing themselves and their friends, with some 'action' shots.  I'd like to take this portraits up a level, so am looking for some advice on how to improve them and give them more depth and character.  I'm taking pictures in a wood, with low light levels, but cannot use flash because it would distract the competition.  A tripod is not really practical because of the terrain. I use a Nikon D80 with an 18-200 lens. Thanks.
