I've read the Tamron's VC actually performs a little better than the Nikon's VR and Tamron's latest focus motor is faster than the previous iteration and actually equals Nikons.  In the Nikon's favor you get more magnification ratio and a little more zoom.  Both are equally sharp.

I do agree a macro lens is not the most ideal for portrait work.  For one thing, as you move inside of maybe 8 feet you start losing aperture (all macro lenses do this.)  On the inside edge of the portrait range you might be looking at F3.5.

As far as sharpness is concerned, I'd rather have a lens that is too sharp, and clean in post, than one that is too soft.
