The Four Thirds Standard was created by Olympus, Panasonic with participation by Kodak, Sigma etc... Out of it Olympus, Panasonic created camera bodies with interchangeable lenses in DSLRs.

It as ahead of its time - the sensor tech had not grown up enough, the cameras were not much smaller than the entry level Canon / Nikon. They tried hard but could not make money.

They then had a look at the type of camera that Canon and Nikon did not make and that was the mirrorless interchangeable lens camera. So they moved away from Four Thirds and started making Micro Four Thirds gear.  With the Olympus OM-D, Olympus finally hit jackpot - the sensor tech was good enough, their body was small enough and they had built up a catalogue of prime lenses and some zooms that were good and small enough.
