What results are you looking for when you use a lens like that?

On my nikon d90 (1.5 crop factor) I had dark 28-80mm f/3.3-f/5.6 zoom lens. After some time I'd decided to buy a prime lens (35mm f/1.8) in order to learn taking pictures with shallow depth of field.

The point is that only with very fast lenses you get full control over the depth of field (blurred background). I doesn't have to be a prime, but fast zooms are really expensive.

Additional adventage of a prime is that one can easily visualize picture, after some time you can really "see like the camera sees the world" - it can be helpfull for the composition.

I mean if some parameters are fixed (focal length & lens angle in this case), the visualisation is simplified and can be better - IMHO.
