the International Snow Sculpture Championships...

are once again underway in Breckenridge, Colorado. This year teams came from Argentina, Australia, Canada/Yukon, Spain, China, Ecuador, Estonia, Germany, Great Britain/Wales, Iceland, Mexico, Mongolia, Singapore, USA/Alaska, and USA/Colorado (Breckenridge). Each sculpture has a theme and story of its own.

The artists have 65 hours to complete their work on a 20-ton block of snow, which ends mid-morning Saturday. Only hand tools, any shape or size, are allowed. The top three winners will be announced during the awards ceremony Sunday afternoon, plus people's choice and kid's choice winners. The sculptures will remain on display 24/7 (always free) through February 3rd.

Here are some shots of the early stages in the carving on Wednesday.

The site.

A 10x10x12 foot block begins to take shape.

Careful measurements of a model are made and transfered to the snow with paint or markers.

Hmm. What's this going to be?

Mongolian teamwork.

A small tool for the fine work.

Gotta start somewhere.

It will be interesting to see how these turn out. It has been quite warm and the silk sun shades some teams erect have helped only a little. But it's supposed to cool off

Thought this might be of some interest. A few of you might be relatively close so come on by if you have a chance.
