It is not a question of opening up the lens. It is a question of you stopping it down too much.

Like everyone else has said. Stop it down to F4.0 and try it. Post some pictures to show us the lack of sharpness you are experiencing at F4.0. If that truly is the case then yes you have a defective lens because everyone elses lens works best at F4.0 and is actually still very good at F2.8.
