I find that also, but to some extent, that becomes even more confusing as you try to determine whether the lens isn't very sharp, or whether you're just not putting enough pixels on the subject. In my opinion most of the problem is the latter. It seems to me that if the lens is sharp at 300mm at close distance, then the lens is sharp at all distances. I suppose coatings that resist image degradation due to atmospheric haze at long distances could have an effect. Heres one from about 3 meters.
