I think people visualize rectangularly

Yes, I know square formats exits for photography, but as I sit here in my office I am aware of what my left eye sees, and what my right eye sees, and that the combined awareness (regardless of whether I am focusing on something or not) is then represented by two image circles adjacent to one another - and a rectangle comes closer to that than a square.

Try it, my vision extends peripherally to the sides much more than it does up and down.  I suspect (with no research whatsoever) that this then affects how we photograph and appreciate photos.
