What about the Tamron 200-400mm lens, which can be had for about $230? Would that be any good? I could then later on supplement it with the Sony 55-200mm, which can be had for under $100 used, or a prime lens in the 100mm range?

What about the Tamron 200-400mm?  There are 3 factors: price, focal length and quality.  Just because a lens has a long focal length and relatively cheap isn't a real reason to buy unless it has exceptional IQ, so you'd be best advised to get the best even if it takes time to save the required pennies.  Do the research first (the Dyxum lens section is a great reference starting point).  Many superb lenses to choose from but there are some real dogs as well, so choose wisely.
