Thanks, Phil. I shoot a lot of waterfowl. After experimenting a fair amount, I settled on manual metering. If, for instance, I shoot a goose up close, I get proper exposure.:

If a light sky is predominant, I still get proper exposure.:

I don't have much of a problem with metering so much. I'm just trying to optimize IQ by selecting the best ISO and balancing aperture vs SS. I was also hoping for AF advice.  Funny, looking at my EXIF data for these two photos, I was probably already there.  I guess I could open up a bit to further reduce my ISO.
