So I actually did the same thing.  The first shot was taken in RAW at 1200mm, on a flimsy $30 tripod, and is just one exposure, thus none of Jupiter's moons are visible.  The second shot was in Auto mode, and full digital zoom, 4800mm.  Believe it or not, this second shot was taken hand-held, with me leaning back against a stair railing and pointing the camera almost straight up.  I would say the IS system is pretty amazing.  The third shot is a crop of one of the Jupiter and moon shots.  It seems that you can actually perceive the bands on the planet.  Unless I'm seeing things.
