Well, actually, they are. Statistics extrapolate from a sample to the population, and quite a few assumptions are necessary for the mathematics to hold.

For sure, but there are many assumptions about the population and the sample that are made in a statistical analysis, as well as criteria that have to be met, and if these assumptions are off and/or the critera not met, the statistical "analysis" simply reduces to speculation.

However, when done well by a competent statistician that is not on the payroll to get a particular result, a statisitical analysis can be insightful:
