Because there's no profit in it. Canon isn't interested in making a boutique camera, and rightly so. Even a proof of concept would be uninteresting because they make wildly popular bodies and lenses already....what would they be trying to prove?

Leica is now a full profitable company. This is another proof that nowadays even boutique or fashionista products can be of interest to big time investors.

Let's see here, Leica is earning about $20,000,000 profit per quarter and Canon is taking in about $900,000,000 per quarter. Canon has a few more employees, a reputation, and many more customers to worry about than Leica.

Why do manufacturers of economic and family cars cars go into the trouble of car racing and competition? Winning, championships, podiums of honor, performance, excitement, mass media, etc. In other words: Prestige, prestige, prestige! People are followers and listen.

And in terms of imaging products Canon kills it in medical, commercial, and industrial equipment. Just because they don't make a camera that sells two copies per month doesn't mean their technological development isn't being pushed to the limit in many other areas of their vast enterprise. In fact, as photographers we are the beneficiaries of not only the profits from consumer cameras but also their huge R&D budgets funded by commercial/industrial pursuits.

An everyday street-looking camera ((with a few teaks) but with the performance of a good dslr could make a great PR ambassador for the whole Canon mark, without losing money or self-cannibalizing other products, I believe.

They obvioulsy have a different opinion.

Another bonus for canon would be to have a platform to test avant-garde features under real life conditions. Just Canon, don't make us beta testers, please!

And you of course think exactly as the whole Canon corporation do. I'm impressed.
