This is interesting. I would have expected them to be lower, because the automatic gear box is much more widespread in America, and makes driving easier. Driving should also be easier because America is much more "buildt around the car".

On the other hand, people may need to drive more often because there are few alternatives (public transport) and the distances are just to long to walk or use a bike. Increased (neccessity of) usage may push total accident numbers up.

Can one of the Anerican posters here enlighten us further?
