If your daughter's face really is "blown up" the problem is that you're too close when you take the shot, not that you're using the wrong focal length. It's hard to imaging you're too close with a 100mm lens, though. Here's a link to a discussion about this issue:

There's some difference of opinion about the best distance, but I think 10' or a little bit further works well for a portrait. Once you're at the right distance, use the focal length that gives you the framing you want.
