I had a hard time to find one on the list that is NOT a "socialist", "income redistribute", "tax and spending" and "godless" country according to out right wing friends. Perhaps those are not bad things after all.

Loas (rank =82) is also Socialist country

Not new news.

This was released months ago and there is plenty of published thoughtful analysis behind these "ranking".

The Legatum "prosperity" ranking is based largely on public opinion polls.

First time U.S. has fallen from the top ten. Must be another ting to blame "Bush" with.

One of their "measures" of economic prosperity is whether residents “have confidence in financial institutions.”This is highly subjective and not an accurate proxy for "prosperity". It is difficult to standardize this between countries.

Last year, only 48 percent of Americans expressed such confidence, compared to the 61 percent global average. But the notion that America’s financial institutions, however serious their problems, are in worse shape than those of most of the rest of the world is ridiculous. Confidence is relative.

Thailand's economy is ranked ahead of the U.S. Which is more "prosperous"?

And what of "social capital"? What the heck is that? What does it have to do with prosperity?

One of the alleged measures of “social capital,” is how many residents “attended a place of worship in the past week.” That's a measure of prosperity? Radical Islamic terrorists would out-"measure" most U.S. citizens in that regard.

This same Legatum index has the U.S. "Health" as #2 in the World. This is obviously not based on infant mortality rates or life expectancy. (Guess what it's based on).

Only a simpleton would look at these rankings and conclude that it is an endorsement for or against either socialism or capitalism.
