price and size not criteria is the 24-70 way better than the 24-85mm for landscapes

It also received a recommendation for the D800 from LensRentals.

I love my 24-70 but if I were travelling and carrying the camera all day I'd have to consider the 24-120 if its significantly lighter or the 70-200mm F4 plus a prime around 24mm. The 28mm F2.8 AIS often comes up as being an excellent yet cheap lens. 2nd hand they are around $400 or less.

Or the Sigma 35mm F1.4 plus the 70-200mm F4. That would be hard to beat. The absolute best for their class. Its whether 35mm is too narrow for landscapes. But then its easy to do panoramas.
