"flaws with your camera technique will be magnified." I agree with this statement. Though I wonder why it still shoud be true in auto mode. I think these cameras can offer all the current flexibility you expect and still be designed to be almost 'failure proof'... eg. face recognition.

One of the reasons auto modes work better on small point and shoots is that the smaller sensors yield greater depth of field, and the lenses on these cameras rarely have really wide apertures.  With a full frame sensor shooting at f/1.2 or even f/2.8, having the camera "guess" where to focus is much more probelematic.  And as for face recognition, although it can be very helpful, not always.  Take the OP's situation involving more than one person--which face should the camera focus on?  If you have to tell the camera which face to focus on, how's that really any easier/faster than using the 5D3's joystick to select the appropriate focus point?

Although it's possible that the auto mode on the 5D3 could be improved, the reality is that this camera wasn't really intended to be shot that way.  And if you try to use it that way, as ofen as not, you're not going to like what you get.  And more importantly, you won't be taking full advantage of the camera's considerable capability.
