Looking to add a "walkabout" lens and wonder if the canon 85mm f1.8 would be a good choice that would complement what I have but not be rtoo redundant.

Uses- portraits and candid shots as well as photos inside ballet studio or theater (most challenging bc of low light and theater spot lights). I have a 50d and currently have:

Nifty fifty, Tamron 70-200 f2.8, Tamron 17-50 f2.8, Sigma 10-20mm f4-5.6

I would think that the 85 would be a bit long for a walkabout lens, especially on an APS body. Having said that, I have both the 1.8 and 1.2 lenses and use both an equal amount. the f1.8 is a beautiful lens that is light to carry and delivers great shots. Personally, I would have thought your nifty 50 would be OK as a walkabout, although its bokeh's not too good. For portraits tough, you can't go wrong with the 85.
