price and size not criteria is the 24-70 way better than the 24-85mm for landscapes

I have gone through many threads.

Users of 24-85 are very happy with what results they are getting, and those that use 24-70 2.8 swear by the lense.

I have the 70-300 and a 50mm 1.8. Getting a D800 or a D600.

I do not mind the Bulk of the 24-70 , that being said, for portraits i use the 70-300 absolutely sharp and great images.. I hardly use the tripod, usually set my camera down on a rock etc..

My main purpose is a lense for Landscape and Occasions. Basically something that will be on the camera all the time. I am an amateur, i can afford the 24-70mm.

24-85 price and size make it an obvious choice. But like have said i don't mind the size or the price of the 24-70 ,

1. do i gain anything by getting the 24-70?. Is the gain is substantial? Please advice.  If you could point me to links where there are comparisons with samples of the two.

2. Also have been reading there may be rumours of a 24-70mm 2.8 with VR coming out. The seller is ready to take back the 24-85mm when that happens in case i want to go in for the new lense or even the old 24-70mm..

4. If the 24-70 is better in all categories would that mean a tamron 24-70mm 2.8 would also be better than the 24-85mm?

5. People with the 24-70 just your take on how difficult is it carrying the 24-70mm around when travelling or walking in new cities or outdoors, taking pictures? Is it a hassle?

6. Last i was not happy at all with the lack of sharpness with my 16-85mm also i had to zoom in all the time lock and zoom out? I believe the 24-70 locks on every time , does the 24-85 mm as fast in focus as the 24-70.
