1/125 with a 270mm focal length?  If you follow the reciprocal shutter speed rule where "Shutter Speed = 1/focal length" then Reilly's deer images was actually slower than necessary.  1/125 would have been too slow for handholding without VR.

And even if he had a tripod in that light, he still would have needed a fairly fast shutter speed to freeze the movements of the deer.  That's where ISO 6400 camera in.  And on a camera like the D800 where you get such clean high ISO images, there is no problem shooting ISO 6400.
