I posted my inquiry (using feedback) a few days ago but have not received any type of reply which may be logical considering the other more pressing Dpreview priorities.

I would like to know the conditions where either Green NEW or Orange NEW is displayed beside various posts. Originally, when only one NEW this indicated that (the viewer, me) has not read this specific post. Then when read, the NEW no longer appeared.

Presently, some are Green and some are Orange and others which I have not read will not have any type of NEW indication.

In fact, any that have either color NEW does not seem to disappear even after reading the post.

Will someone (that knows the details) please explain.

They're the same as they've always been: red is new since your last visit, green is new since your last session started (i.e since you arrived) - unless the last post is over 12 hours ago (from memory) in which case it's not new by any definition.

We dropped these labels in the redesign, then brought them back because a lot of people asked (they are kind of redundant IMO).

The white dots to the left of the subject tell you whether you've read some - or all - of the posts in a thread.

Note that you didn't get a reply because we were all at CES (and before that on our xmas break when we basically close shop for 2 weeks).

Simon, I have observed the NEW indicators for a day or so (after your reply) and this brings up a question as to when are the NEW indicators changed (or dropped) after I open and review a post. They seem to still be present as NEW even after closing down Dpreview and reopening it and review the same Thread and same posts.

I will appreciate your help regarding this.

Simon, it may have something to do regarding the indicators are perhaps not updated in real time -- meaning -- in a short period of time after opening/viewing a post. I will review for a while to see if I may find when the status updates are actual performed. Is this performed on a time lapse basis. Obviously, I am confused regarding this.

they are not affected by your visiting a post/thread - they are global indicators of activity. If you want to know about read/unread status of posts in threads use the white dots. I'm working on an FAQ.

Thanks Simon. My latest observation completely aligns with your information but I just couldn't determine what condition(s) made the NEW (regardless of color) actually disappear.

I believe the NEW that was used a few years ago (don't remember specific date) were basically an indicator that indicated (to the viewer) it is a new entry since last viewed the thread but after reviewing, the NEW disappeared so that the next time when viewing the thread that previous NEW (that was viewed) had completely disappeared which resulted in NEW meaning it is truly NEW for the specific viewer and any NEW posts are truly NEW at this time.

Anyway, thanks for your rime and reply.

Hey..... when I opened this thread how come I didn't see a "NEW" appear on this unread post which is only 1 hour old.............?

Hank, Simon has replied to my inquiries and the information He included in his posts is all I have (or know) regarding any of the NEW indicators.  I believe, since I was thinking (or opinion) the NEW indicators were a notice to (me) or any person that opened a Thread as to which He/She have NOT read.  Instead, as explained by Simon; the NEW indicators are "Global" which basically means they are applicable (to be the same status) for anyone that opens a specific Thread.

I will admit that (even with the explanations) that the various NEW indicators are basically of no benefit for me -- but that is something I can function without and Dpreview have the right to provide what they consider to be the most useful for the overall number of participants on the Forums.

I actually depend on the color of a post caption to know Posts that I have opened and read as desired.  I was trying to use the NEW indicators as being some status of Posts that are NEW for me.  After the very helpful replies from Simon, I no longer use the NEW as I did previously.

This does not answer your specific inquiry but hopefully will add to your already acquired information regarding the subject
