budget vs reality

I have 5 computers in use now. I've upgraded 3 in the past year. Only this one gave me a problem - as in timesuck.
I"ve been working with/on PCs for nearly 30 years (since fall 1983) and sold them for awhile, have 2 close friends that work full time with them and one has for 26 years.
But as you say, yes i've budgeted for this upgrade. And I HATE upgrades - as in 'breaking in' a new computer. Some of that is me - Win8 is different than vista or xp (as in the interface, file search functions, etc).   It's THIS cost that one often ignores, especially as a newbie/hobbyist.
When I did this for fun getting new software or a new computer was great fun - wow, so much faster, look at everything I can do now, etc.
Today my perspective is different. A computer (and it's software) is a tool, nothing more. I don't want to spend 10 hours learning to use a new hammer or wrench - or a new computer. That's 10 hours I could better spend on sales, marketing, editing, learning a new technique, etc.
I signed up 4 baseball/softball leagues for april this past week and am waiting to hear back from 2 soccer leagues. I have 'budgeted' my time in april to shooting/processing/ordering their products. Should i need to get a new camera or light or background stand (or printer or the lab has new products, new software, CS7 comes out, etc) I don't have a couple of days to learn how to do what worked just fine last week - yet it's the cost of running a business - and one that is often 'hidden' - as in something you didn't plan for.

My opinions are my own and not those of DPR or it's administration. They carry no 'special' value (except to me of course)
