MS has announced that it is phasing out Windows Live Messenger. (Although the exact details are a bit sketchy and/or ambiguous.)

Microsoft purchased Skype a while back, and it includes the same type of chat features you have with Windows Live Messenger. You'll see more about the "instant messaging" features of Skype on their site (it can be used for that purpose, too -- not just for voice/video calls).

So, rather than maintain two separate products for that purpose, Microsoft is going to discontinue any further development on Windows Live Messenger and require users of it migrate to Skype instead.

Here's one of many articles on the subject:

AFAIK, that has nothing to do with Windows Live Mail (I don't see them discontinuing it anytime soon).

Personally, I don't use Windows Live Mail (even though I have a mail account with I just use Thunderbird to access mail for that account instead (as I have my PCs setup so that I can use Thunderbird for multiple e-mail addresses, including addresses, addresses, Microsoft addresses, and even addresses associated with domain names that I own).

But, if you want to use Windows Live Mail for e-mail purposes, the changes should not impact you. They're only related to Windows Live Messenger, where you'll need to migrate to Skype to continue using the chat/messaging features that Microsoft Live Messenger provides.

unfortunelty with the move to windows 8, MS also discontinued windows live brand.

windows live mail will no longer be developed.

all the windows live replacement apps in windows 8 are horrible.

Skype is also quite crappy, compared to live messenger, while skype has nice voice and video chat, the actually messenger and UI is really lacking.
