Yeah, we did fine. Does that mean we shouldn't have bought anything since? No AF, no stabilization, no improvements in "ASA"?

Of course it doesn't. Most of the improvements in today's cameras are called improvements because that's what they are. And they're still getting better. So what's the problem?

Will any of it make us better photographers? It won't give us better eyes or hearts or minds for seeing photographically, but it helps us get some shots we wouldn't have gotten with the old gear. Are some people jerks about it, berating others over every minor improvement in IQ or AF? Of course - some people are always jerks. We had jerks in the film days too. I remember some of them - I was there. Of course we didn't have the constant amplification of the internet then, so maybe we didn't see as many of the jerks congregate and find each other, but that's not the CAMERA'S fault. That's a different technological advance altogether. Complain about THAT! But of course the internet brought plenty of benefits too, it's just that every coin has two sides, every sword two edges.
