Sample of my problem with a77 and Sony 58 flash. Same camera position, same natural lighting, same flash orientation, and auto everything (both flash and a77)

I could live with consistently getting exposures like the first one, even if a little over exposed.

Was this using Auto ISO? Was it with P mode, A, S, M or Auto?

It is interesting that they have the same exposure (aperture/shutter), but one is at ISO 400 and one at 800, and has about 1 stop extra exposure. Similar to mine, it is as if it calculate the settings for flash correctly, then inexplicably changes the ISO or aperture as if trying to expose for ambient light, without telling the flash.

I would guess that if using fixed aperture, and A or M mode to lock the aperture you will get more consistency.
