When I was using my 40D, I loved the 85 1.8. It was decently sharp wide open, and super-sharp stopped down to f/2.8. The AF is very fast and accurate, the colors and contrast were very pleasing.

When I traveled, my kit was often only the 17-55 f/2.8 and this 85 1.8.

That said, I never considered this a walk-around lens. It was my vacation telephoto/action/portraits lens (I had a 70-200L 2.8 IS as well, but that was too heavy for me to travel with).

The only real issue was lots of purple fringing. I nick-named mine my purple lens. However, it's easy to remove the fringing in post-processing.
