The 85 / 1.8 was my most used lens on a 20D...

Looking to add a "walkabout" lens and wonder if the canon 85mm f1.8 would be a good choice that would complement what I have but not be rtoo redundant.

Uses- portraits and candid shots as well as photos inside ballet studio or theater (most challenging bc of low light and theater spot lights). I have a 50d and currently have:

Nifty fifty, Tamron 70-200 f2.8, Tamron 17-50 f2.8, Sigma 10-20mm f4-5.6

...but it was often a bit long -- a 60 / 1.4 would have been better.  Still, that didn't stop me from making good use with it:

So, 50 / 1.4 is a bit short, 85 / 1.8 a bit long -- choose your poison.  There's also the Sigma 85 / 1.4 for double the money, which has been well received.

You already have the 50 / 1.8, so if you get the 85 / 1.8 and like it, you may find that the 50 / 1.8 you already have is a bit too close, and may wish to consider a 30 / 1.4 or 35 / 1.4 to complement it.
