i agree too but we're are only talking a stop.  if the canon were f2.8 or f4 i would completely agree with you.  i think what get's lost in the debate is the canon is an F2 lens that is sharp wide open.

but.....

what strengthens the argument for the sigma is it is sharper than the canon at F2 and it is very sharp wide open.  not 50 1.4 sharp or 35L sharp.  REAL sharp.
