Devil in the details

I find this interesting and difficult to interpret.

Over on the Lula website forums there are some quite academic threads looking at the effects of the Bayer CFA on resolution. They have even developed special resolution charts to specifically test this that show that for AA-less sensors, the best modern demosaic algorithms can reconstruct 90% of the monochrome resolution.

Recovering 90% of what was there is not the same as capturing all of it.  Sometimes the most crucial things are in the last 10%... remove 10% of the bolts from your engine and see how well it runs.

You can tell the tests being run are a crock though;  It's impossible to claim the demosaic algorithms capture any one fixed number (90 %) when performance is fundamentally determined (and varies) by the colors in the scene.  I'm sure they do very well shooting yet ANOTHER monochrome chart (the chart used to arrive at the 90% figure was - SURPRISE - monochrome).

You can read the whole thread here:

Although I don't know why anyone would want to as it's host to all the of same broken arguments for bayer/against Foveon that have been done to death in these forums.

And as per usual, no examples with REAL images.  Just a lot of noise and theory, signifying nothing.
