Looking to add a "walkabout" lens and wonder if the canon 85mm f1.8 would be a good choice that would complement what I have but not be rtoo redundant.

Uses- portraits and candid shots as well as photos inside ballet studio or theater (most challenging bc of low light and theater spot lights). I have a 50d and currently have:

Nifty fifty, Tamron 70-200 f2.8, Tamron 17-50 f2.8, Sigma 10-20mm f4-5.6

If you already have a 2.8 70-200 I would not suggest it. I'd instead try saving up for a full frame body that will do better in those low light theater and studio shots and investing into a Canon 70-200 F4 IS after getting rid of the Tamron.

That's around $2500 (6D plus lens) rather than $350, not to mention the cost of replacing the 17-50 and the 10-20, both of which are APS-C designs.
