It depends in part on what you mean by "mushy".

Wide angle lenses are not at their best in the corners wide open

Nikons MTF for this lens confirms this

Nikons MTF for the other wide-angle zooms confirm similar, though less severe, limitations.

I recently sold my copy because at f2.8 it is not as good in the corners as my 14-24. On a detail I do not regard the 14-24 corners as outstanding at f2.8.
