Yes, the 17-35/2.8 AFS needs to be stopped way down to get rid of the mushy corners. When I got my D800 I thought I'd be selling my 17-35/2.8, but it's stayed because the 16-35/4 is not much, if at all, better (at the same apertures).

There is rumored to be a 16-35/2.8 in the works, but it will likely be larger and far far more expensive.  Maybe your copy needs a checkup to make sure it isn't out of whack in some way.
