I have the D300 and 70-200 VRII and love the combo for youth hockey.  I have a peewee and squirt in hockey and shoot their games as much as possible.

I was in the same position as you a while back and considered the 85mm f/1.8 lens.  If you are shooting from the penalty box, it will serve you well.  You will be able to cover about 2/3rds of the ice with that lens.  If you can't get in the penalty box, your best bet is to shoot from behind the opposing goalie as your team is coming towards you.

One more bit of advice which was suggested to me that I'll pass along is to rent both lenses and try them out.  A little money spent up front could save alot in the long run.
