thanks everyone for your responses.  Ok- I have decided against going the Canon route since it isn't very practical.  As it is I don't know the Nikon D800 very well when it comes to using it for action/nature type shots where the subject is moving so I should concentrate on learning how to use this camera.

Thank you Paul for your comment on the 300mm f4.  The trip leader actually has recommended that the 300 f4 with the 1.4X is a better option than the 70-200 2.8 with the 2X.  Nice to hear that you agree with him and not the guys at the camera store.
