D700: should I try RAW/NEF

From reading forum,

RAW/NEF is better than JPEG, because it allows better editing.
It allows more exposure/white balance fixing (over/under exposed).

If you use jpeg on D700, it is a waste!
(seems to imply, if you use jpeg, please just use a point and shoot)

If not edited (if photoshop skills not applied), NEF is more plain and less contrasty.
JPEG looks better. (I tried this, and I agree)

Does anyone still have NEF files from Nikon D1? Does it still load up in your lightroom/photoshop?
I have no confidence that NEF from D700 can be read 8, 10 years or longer from now.
I feel JPEG may be able to be read 10 years from now.
Of course this are just blind guesses.
This is a strong factor against my using NEF.
I would be very unhappy if all my precious photos cannot be read 10 years from now,
because I chose NEF over JPEG.

Does NEF contains more detail?
E.g. if zoomed to 100%, does NEF show finer hair, finer details on human skin than JPEG?
I guess I am asking...  Does NEF resolve better? or something to that extent.

Thanks for your opinion and comments on the above.
