By using a calibrated screen one of the variables becomes a constant. And a calibrator is not fooled by other factors as us humans are. Ambient light is important there are international ISO standards as to what this should be in order to make the calibration valid. The biggest variable will be changing light conditions: a darker room with halogen lighting, sunlight bursting in through a window, a room with vibrantly colored walls? If you have time try this: hang behind your screen  a large green drape the colors will tend to look too magenta on screen, with a reddish drape the colors will look too green/ cyan. Editing with a non neutral background increases the chance that we add a compensatory cast. The same goes for brightness a too  bright background or room lighting wiil lead us to over brighten the image. If editing in a bright place increase the screen brightness to compensate.The calibration for brighter/ outdoor conditions will use the maximum screen brightness. Years ago many calibrated their screens to 80 cd/square meter and edited in dimly lit rooms in order to get as close as possible to a final print. For prints that still works best for me, however a good quality screen is needed. These days 100-120cd/sq M is normal for indoor work.

If you can calibrate do so, but be aware that changing conditions alter the field of play somewhat. Most calibrators can measure the ambient light.
