I recommend you use a fast 7200rpm external hard drive for your image storage and for your Lightroom Catalog.  You should also keep a backup of your images and the Lightroom catalog backup on the laptop hard drive.

Using a 7200rpm external drive will considerably speed up Lightroom vs using the lower speed 5200rpm drives.

If you are working with Windows assign the external drive a drive letter at the end of the alphabet - mine is Z Drive.  This keeps the hard drive from being assigned a different drive letter when attached to a different computer and thus keeps Lightroom from losing your images.

Doing this way will allow you to move from the laptop to the desktop flawlessly.
