Help! Tokina 12-24 Won't fit my D5100

I purchased from an Amazon seller and just received a used Tokina 12-24mm lens.  The lens is labeled: "AT-X Pro"/"SD 12-24 F4 (IF) DX II ".  The instructions say it is for APS-C cameras, and from my research, I thought it was supposed to fit my D5100.  However, the Tokina's metal connector ring is too big and won't fit into the camera's lens opening.  What's going on?
