some sympathy for the Java community

Just like the open source crowd the Java community for the most part has honorable intentions and is just trying to accomplish something outside Microsoft's claws.

The problem is that most casual PC users simply don't have the administrative skills to maintain Java properly. They install it to get some piece of software to work, then forget about and get sick of the nags from Java's updater.

Java has a far bigger footprint inside my corporate accounts, particularly in education. However, most of those are internal servers. A bigger problem is 3/4 of enterprise level Java systems I encounter require legacy clients, and flat out will pull support if you patch Java to the most recent version.
